Generative Artificial Intelligence – Culmination of the Interplay of Creativity and Technology?

I graduated as a clinical psychologist, and during those studies I was confronted with the limitations and oppression that often come with a traditional, problem-oriented approach to mental well-being. I could identify more with an anti-psychiatric view, that mental disorders are often 'normal' reactions to the pressure and madness of society. That is why I focused on creativity during my internship and thesis, a view that I further developed in my career in healthcare.

In my spare time I was able to put that view into practice. First I specialized in multi-layered stencil technique (you can see these stencil paintings here), after which I increasingly started to use technology to develop my creations. I learned to work with a laser cutter, 3D printer and VR headset, but it is mainly the rise of artificial intelligence that has had a major influence on my creativity in recent years.

Awareness of the use of artificial intelligence and its impact on our society is crucial to me. Copyright legislation is still unclear, the ecological impact is significant, jobs are threatened, the distinction between reality and fiction is becoming increasingly blurred... Generative AI is a very powerful technology and can certainly be misused. These risks lead to resistance, negativity, and fear in many people, and while I fully understand this, I don't want to be deterred by them. A common criticism is that AI is a threat to human creativity, but in my experience, that doesn't have to be the case. Like most people, I find the sheer amount of "AI slop" flooding not only the internet but also the public sphere quite disturbing. But for me personally, Generative AI is a step in an evolution of technology that can enhance creativity, and I am committed to using this technology in the best possible way.
